What happens after the competition may matter just as much as the competition itself.
That was the central idea behind “Leave the Rest to TEMPUR,” a three-day experiential retreat mounted by TEMPUR Philippines in La Union from April 22 to 24, bringing together athletes, personalities, and wellness advocates for a recovery-focused escape that highlighted the role of quality sleep in physical performance.

Held across the beachfront properties of Alpas La Union in Bacnotan and Grover’s Elyu in San Juan, the event combined athletic challenges, outdoor activities, and wellness sessions with what the brand described as “performance sleep” through TEMPUR-equipped rooms fitted with its mattresses and pillows.

The retreat gathered two teams composed of athletes and former professional basketball players. Team Alpas included Justin Coveney, Lara Liwanag, Justin Hernandez, Mark Mugen, and Ray Querubin, while Team Grover’s featured Jason Webb, JC Intal, Rico Maierhofer, Larry Fonacier, and Ryan Araña. Hosting the activities was media personality Sam YG.

The competitive atmosphere was established early through team interviews and beachside activities, though the event placed equal emphasis on recovery and downtime. Guests participated in yoga and stretching sessions, paddle boarding, kayaking, relay games, and mental challenges designed to test endurance, coordination, and focus under pressure.
“We are here to win,” Ryan Araña said ahead of the games, while Justin Coveney playfully responded, “We’ll put them to sleep.”

Beyond the competitions, the retreat also highlighted the connection between movement, rest, and wellness. Participants spent evenings unwinding through bonfire sessions, beachfront dinners, and music-filled gatherings that encouraged conversation and relaxation after physically demanding activities.

At the center of the experience were the accommodations themselves, with both Alpas La Union and Grover’s Elyu transformed into recovery spaces powered by TEMPUR sleep products. The rooms were designed to promote restorative rest through pressure relief and adaptive support, reinforcing the brand’s message that recovery is essential to sustained performance.
By the end of the retreat, Team Alpas emerged as the overall winner of the games, but much of the event’s focus shifted toward how the participants felt after days spent under the sun and in competition.
Several guests shared their experiences with sleep and recovery throughout the stay.

Mark Mugen described the experience as “one of the best sleeps ever,” adding that “sleep is crucial… if you have good night sleep, then you would perform better.”

Justin Coveney also reflected on the stay, saying, “Last night’s sleep was amazing because of the TEMPUR pillow and mattresses. We didn’t even wake up for breakfast, that’s how good the sleep was.”

Lara Liwanag shared, “Sobrang happy ako with my sleep last night after being under the sun for the whole day. I’m really looking forward to it because alam ko matutulog ako sa TEMPUR and I feel fully recovered.”

For former basketball player JC Intal, uninterrupted rest stood out most during the retreat. “I can say that I’ve had the best sleep in my entire life because it was uninterrupted,” he said.

Ryan Araña also emphasized the importance of investing in quality sleep and recovery, while Jason Webb described his rest during the retreat by saying, “It was 7 hours, but those 7 hours felt like royalty.”
The event also marked TEMPUR’s continuing presence in the Philippines, where the brand has operated for two decades. Originally developed from technology created by NASA scientists in the 1960s to absorb pressure during space travel, TEMPUR material has since evolved into a sleep system designed to adapt to the body’s shape, weight, and temperature.

By combining high-energy activities with recovery-focused experiences, the La Union retreat underscored a growing wellness conversation that extends beyond fitness itself: performance is not only about how hard the body works, but also how well it rests.
