As the meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (M.I.C.E.) sector continues to gain ground in the Philippines, venue operators are placing greater focus on leadership that can support both scale and global competitiveness. Within this context, SM Hotels and Conventions Corp. (SMHCC) has named Sherwin Lucas as General Manager of SMX Convention Center Manila, while also entrusting him with the upcoming SMXCITE, a new large-scale venue set to rise within the Mall of Asia Complex and open in 2027.
Lucas steps into the role with an extensive background in hospitality and events management, bringing more than two decades of industry experience. Prior to this appointment, he led Park Inn by Radisson Iloilo and Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod as Area General Manager, where both properties recorded strong business performance and operational gains under his direction. His tenure was also marked by improvements in guest experience and recognition within the industry.
Experience shaped by global exposure
His career trajectory spans both local and international markets, beginning in operations before progressing into senior leadership roles. Earlier in his career, Lucas served as Director of Events Service at Sheraton Grand Macao and The St. Regis Macao, where he earned the APAC Regional Event Leadership Award in 2016. His academic background includes degrees in Commerce from the University of Muntinlupa and the University of the Philippines, complemented by leadership and management training abroad.
This blend of operational expertise and international exposure is expected to support the continued positioning of SMX as a major player in the regional events landscape.
Strengthening the country’s MICE platform
In his new role, Lucas will oversee the ongoing operations of SMX Convention Center Manila while preparing for the launch of SMXCITE, which is envisioned as a large-format venue for international trade shows and exhibitions. The project forms part of SMHCC’s broader strategy to expand its footprint in the M.I.C.E. sector and accommodate larger, more complex events.

The appointment comes as SMHCC continues to build out its portfolio of convention and exhibition venues, aligning with the country’s push to strengthen its presence in business tourism. With new developments underway and established venues in operation, the group is positioning itself to respond to increasing demand for large-scale events and international gatherings.
