Ayala Land’s Car-Free Sundays initiative continues to grow beyond Metro Manila and Cebu, with new editions recently launched in Davao City and Negros. What began as a weekend activity along Ayala Avenue in Makati has evolved into a broader movement centered on healthier lifestyles, walkable spaces, and stronger community interaction across its mixed-use estates.
By temporarily opening streets to pedestrians, cyclists, runners, and families, the initiative encourages people to experience urban spaces at a slower and more social pace—less focused on traffic and more centered on movement, recreation, and everyday well-being.
A more relaxed pace in Davao
In Davao City, the initiative recently made its way to Azuela Cove, where the experience takes on a more recreational and social atmosphere. Visitors can move around the estate using vintage bicycles, tandem bikes, and electric scooters, offering a more relaxed way to explore the waterfront development and its open spaces.
Rather than simply closing roads to vehicles, the activity encourages people to engage with the estate at a slower pace, turning streets and parks into areas for leisure, movement, and casual interaction.
Creating community spaces in Negros
A different approach can be seen at North Point in Talisay City, Negros, where Car-Free Sundays leans more toward community-centered use. Surrounded by residential neighborhoods, the estate provides an accessible setting for families and nearby residents to spend time outdoors through walking, biking, and other simple weekend activities.
The appeal lies less in organized programming and more in the everyday experience of having safe and open shared spaces within the community.
Building on momentum in Cebu
The expansion follows the continued popularity of Car-Free Sundays in Cebu Business Park and Cebu I.T. Park, where the initiative has become a familiar part of weekend routines for many residents and visitors.
In Cebu Business Park, increasing participation has led to extended operating hours, with activities now running until 5 p.m. The longer schedule has also introduced additional attractions such as a Sunday market and outdoor pickleball sessions.
Meanwhile, Cebu I.T. Park continues to attract a steady mix of joggers, cyclists, pet owners, and families, reinforcing its reputation as one of the region’s more walkable lifestyle districts.
Changing how urban spaces are experienced
Across its different locations, Car-Free Sundays reflects a broader shift in how mixed-use estates are being designed and experienced. Beyond serving as residential or commercial centers, these developments are increasingly incorporating spaces that encourage movement, interaction, and a stronger sense of community.
