The Br. Fidelis Leddy Center for Learning Resources (CLR) of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde has been recognized for its approach to inclusive and forward-thinking design, receiving the Innovative Library Design Award from the Philippine Association of Academic/Research Librarians (PAARL).
Granted under the Medium Size Category, the award highlights how spatial planning and design can support learning, teaching, and research within academic communities. It also underscores the evolving role of libraries as environments that go beyond traditional functions, shaping more responsive and engaging learning experiences.
The recognition reflects Benilde’s broader effort to reimagine its resource centers across campuses, combining functional efficiency with thoughtfully designed interiors that support a wide range of users. The award was presented during PAARL’s 53rd General Assembly and Awarding Ceremony at the National Library of the Philippines, with representatives from the institution receiving the citation on behalf of the college.
“This recognition affirmed the vision behind the redesigned Br. Fidelis Leddy Center for Learning Resources and focused on the institution’s commitment to innovation, inclusion, and excellence in academic library spaces,” Napoles stated.
Central to the CLR’s design is accessibility. Spaces have been configured to accommodate diverse learning needs, from Filipino Sign Language-friendly features to flexible layouts that allow users to adapt their environment. Wide pathways enable ease of movement for wheelchair users, while tactile flooring guides individuals who are blind or have low vision.
“From Filipino Sign Language (FSL)-friendly features to flexible learning spaces and an efficient room-booking system, the library supports diverse learning styles and needs,” Mojica expounded. “Together, these elements create an accessible, adaptable, and forward-thinking educational environment for all Benildeans,” he added.
Across its campuses, the CLR presents a range of spaces designed to suit different modes of learning. Quiet zones such as the Think Hub offer areas for focused study, while collaborative pods encourage group work and idea exchange. Interiors at the Taft Campus, defined by soft tones and muted palettes, are designed to support clearer visual communication, particularly for students from the School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies and the Benilde Deaf School.
The Material Resource Hub at the Design + Arts Campus introduces a more tactile dimension to learning, providing access to materials such as textiles, wood, and metals through a partnership with the Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development.
“Innovative and inclusive learning spaces are important because they allow libraries to respond to the diverse needs of their communities,” Mojica explained.
“Anchored in the CLR’s vision and mission, these spaces promote accessibility, engagement, and a sense of belonging – enabling students to participate fully and develop as lifelong learners,” he added.
Through its design approach, Benilde’s learning resource centers reflect a shift toward environments that prioritize adaptability, inclusivity, and user experience, positioning the library as both a place for study and a shared space for community and growth.
